PhD position: Geoscience And Its Role In The Low Carbon Energy Transition
项目简介:
Centre For Doctoral Training (CDT): Geoscience And Its Role In The Low Carbon Energy Transition: Impact Of CO2 Permeation On Inter-Layers And Reservoir Cap-Rock Sealing Efficiency
Supervisor 1: Sean Rigby
Supervisor 2: Joseph Wood (University of Birmingham)
Project description: CO2 sequestration and storage offers the potential to manage the transition to fully non-carbon energy by allowing the continued use of fossil fuels while new technologies are developed, but with heavily reduced or net zero atmospheric emissions. CO2 is generally stored underground in suitable spent reservoirs, such as the old gas fields in the southern North Sea. Successful storage requires that the reservoir caprock maintain its integrity and sealing efficiency for long periods. However, during CO2 injection, the plume will migrate through the reservoir, and begin to permeate any shale inter-layers, and even the cap-rock.

PhD position in Development of New Ammonia/Hydrogen Combustors for Gas Turbines
项目简介:
A hydrogen economy has been the focus of researchers and developers over the decades. However, the complexity of moving and storing hydrogen has always been a major obstacle to deploy the concept. Therefore, other materials can be employed to improve handling whilst reducing cost over long distances and long periods. Ammonia, a highly hydrogenated molecule, can be used to store and distribute hydrogen easily, as the molecule has been employed for more than 120 years for fertilizer purposes. Being a carbon-free chemical, ammonia (NH3) has the potential to support a hydrogen transition thus decarbonising transport, power and industries.
However, the complexity of using ammonia for power generation lays on the appropriate use of the chemical to reach high power outputs combined with currently low efficiencies that bring up overall costs. This complex scenario is also linked to the production of combustion profiles that tend to be highly polluting (with high NOx emissions and slipped unburned ammonia).

PhD Studentship Opportunity in Machine-Assisted Translation
项目简介:
Established in 1982, the University of Surrey Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) is one of the UK’s leading centres for research, scholarship and teaching in translation and interpreting. CTS has recently secured funding for strategic expansion, which will enable the centre to integrate its established expertise in how professional translators/interpreters interact with, and adapt to, emerging technological ecosystems with research into the automation of these practices. This expansion project seeks to recruit eligible PhD candidates who are willing to conduct research in the following area: PhD in Machine-Assisted Translation.
We are seeking a candidate who is interested in pursuing a PhD with a focus on how the capabilities of humans and machines may be integrated. The main focus of this project will be on how quality estimation and/or automatic post-editing can improve the productivity of professional translators.

PhD position in Embedded optical sensors for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells
项目简介:
Catalyst durability is currently one of the biggest challenges limiting widespread commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The high surface-area carbon catalyst support materials are susceptible to corrosion under various operating regimes. Characterising the mechanisms of this degradation currently requires a suite of measurement techniques designed to replicate the operating conditions in a real fuel cell, but these can never be completely accurate. There is growing interest in using in situ methods to measure various key parameters in a representative operating device.
This project will develop a technique to embed optical fibres in a PEM fuel cell to carry out optical spectroscopic measurements in order to characterise carbon support materials during real operating conditions, observing the chemical corrosion mechanisms that take place during accelerated stress testing, which is known to lead to catalyst degradation.

PhD Position: Silicon Carbide Power Electronics
项目简介:
The Advanced Power Semiconductor Laboratory (APS) at the Department of Information Technology (D-ITET) is looking for a PhD candidate working on wide-bandgap semiconductor research involving device fabrication and characterization.
Project background
With the continuous increase of the worldwide power consumption, energy efficiency is a primary concern of our modern society. Wide-bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) are promising candidates to increase the efficiency of power electronic systems by replacing conventional Si devices. However, despite their successful entrance into the power electronic market, a number of issues have to be resolved to realize the full potential of this material.
Job description
This project focuses on the investigation of material and device properties of silicon carbide. Optimization of established device fabrication methods as well as the development of electrical characterization methods will deepen the understanding of current performance limitations of

PhD position in Program Verification
项目简介:
(ref. BAP-2019-618)
DistriNet is an international research group with extensive expertise in secure & distributed software. Embedded in the department of Computer Science of KU Leuven, DistriNet brings together a substantial critical mass of +/- 90 researchers, including 12 full-time professors, 10 permanent research staff members, 11 postdoctoral researchers, and about 60 PhD researchers. The conducted research is systems-centric, always application-driven and often performed in close collaboration with industry (e.g. in industrial automation, healthcare, transport & logistics). The know-how of DistriNet formed the basis of multiple spin-off companies ( https://distrinet.cs.kuleuven.be/spinoffs/ ). The DistriNet program verification team, operating under the supervision of Prof. Bart Jacobs, is mainly focused on trying to find practical approaches for software development teams to verify security properties and other important properties of programs.

PhD position in Hearing colour and seeing sound - switchable polymer molecular imaging agents
项目简介:
Hearing colour and seeing sound - switchable polymer molecular imaging agents for visualizing disease progression
Molecular imaging aims to use non-invasive techniques to probe and visualize molecules in the body, which can be used to measure biochemical processes and disease progression. While these can be endogenous molecules, it is common to use exogenous and synthetic agents. One particularly interesting class of exogenous agents are polymer imaging agents, as they have high chemical functionality and can be designed to optimize their biological properties.
In this project you will aim to synthesise and characterise polymeric molecular imaging agents, which are able to switch their signal output based on interactions with biochemical processes. This can include optical energy for fluorescence imaging, acoustic signal for photoacoustic imaging and electronic properties for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). While the imaging techniques are diverse, the fundamental principle are the same, the chemical nat

PhD position in Multi-impact operability modelling
项目简介:
We invite applicants to apply for a fully funded PhD position in reliability modelling in New Zealand.
Background:
The project is concerned with modelling the effect of multiple impacts to infrastructure by the same or different natural hazards. Impact from a previously occurring hazard can make the infrastructure more vulnerable to subsequent hazards. The requirement is to develop a vulnerability model (incorporating type of infrastructure, multiple hazard types, the magnitude of the subsequent hazards, the damage state from the earlier hazards, and repairs). This is a very complex problem, which will be initially approached via experiments on multiple same-hazard impacts, and then statistically extended to different hazards. Computational modelling and/or expert elicitation will also have a prominent role. There is scope to modify the project aim according to the successful candidate’s interests and expertise. This PhD will be linked to a PhD at the University of Auckland that is concentrating on experim
